I first met Barry Burns at a music festival where he taught me a number of things in relation to interviewing, recording and presenting. He demonstrated clearly the process of mixing and recording live music and gave me the opportunity to try out my own skills. Barry discussed various presentation skills and tips and coached me through the experience of audience interaction on stage.
I learnt the importance of preparation and having knowledge of your subject in presentation work. Throughout this experience Barry was reassuring and helped build my confidence.
On three follow up sessions I have learnt many other skills under Barry's careful tuition.
He takes time to explain technical information so that it is easily understood. I am very pleased to have learnt practical skills on a Denon mixer DN-X1500 and Denon CD players DN-S5000 which was connected up to a Mac computer. He also patiently showed me the hardware part of the equipment for radio designed by
Avid Technology.
Barry taught me many other important skills for the radio including; how to add subtle effects to music, the importance of levels, PFL and cross-fade. This is relevant for broadcasting live on radio or alternatively at an open air event. In addition I was able to experiment with cueing in songs during a live show and panning the music onto different speakers.
Barry taught these skills in a very thorough and well planned way so that I did not become confused, even though we covered a substantial amount of work in a very short space of time. I am very grateful indeed and am looking forward to the next session.
